Nauru, officially the Republic of Nauru and formerly known as Pleasant Island. Is the state of the island in Micronesia in the South Pacific, which is located next to the Banaba Island in Kiribati, and 300 km (186 miles) to the east. With a population of 9,378 individuals, live on an area of 21 square kilometers (8.1 square miles), Nauru is the smallest state in the South Pacific, and the second smallest state in terms of population in the world, after the Vatican City.
Settled people in Micronesia and Polynesia, Nauru and included as a colony by the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Nauru became a League of Nations mandate to Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied Nauru, by bypassing the Pacific. After the war, the country entered in custody again. Nauru gained its independence in 1968. Nauru boast that inhabited enjoy the highest per capita income of any sovereign state in the world during the late 1960s and 1970s.
Nauru is an island rock with layers of rich phosphate near the surface, which allows mining operations of the sector. Became containing phosphate resources as of 2011, but it is not economically viable for extraction.
